The Miami Dolphins announced Monday that Ryan Tannehill has officially won the starting quarterback job and will start the 2012 season as the starter. This decision by coach Philbin is a risky one, as Tannehill just started his first career game Friday against the Panthers.
“It was a close competition,” Philbin said, “You’re trusting your instincts in terms of what’s in the best interests of the team. … We like a lot of things about Ryan. He has a chance to be a very good player.”
The season starts September 9th against Houston. But one has to believe that Philbin and the Dolphins have to be hoping for solid performances out of Tannehill, but nothing special from their mediocre team. This is a situation like the Panthers last year, where they had a bad record, 6-10, but they found their quarterback of the future in Cam Newton. That is exactly what Miami is looking for by starting Tannehill.
Ryan Tannehill now adds to the pretty long list of rookie quarterback starters in the NFL with top picks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, and Brandon Weeden for Cleveland. The race for rookie of the year will be a good one this year, I’ll definitely be tuning in to check out these young studs, hopefully you will too.
