Women's soccer brings home gold for USA

One year after Hope Solo, Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan were upset by Japan in the World Cup, they came back and beat them 2-1 in the Gold Medal Match of the 2012 London Olympics. Both goals were scored by Carli Lloyd for the US, and Hope Solo made some unbelievable saves, including a diving stop to keep the game tied with less than 10 minutes left.

Leader Abby Wambach stated after the game, “This win feels like everything has come full circle. It was a team effort for this whole tournament.” This win for the United States gives them gold in every single Olympics, despite 2000, since soccer’s inception in 1996.

The lone goal for Japan was scored by Yuki Ogimi in the 64th minute, but Japan had many chances, with five shots on goal. This gold medal match between the two best teams in the world drew a record crowd for a women’s soccer match of 80,203 at the hallowed Wembley Stadium.
